Ohio's abbreviated adult driver training requirement applies to applicants age 21 or older who fail their first road or maneuverability test attempt and have not completed an approved driver training course during the previous 12 months. The online course is the four-hour classroom portion of that requirement.
A Skillful Driver delivers the online instruction through an Ohio DPS-approved course operated by an Ohio DPS-licensed driver training school. The course is built for adults who need to complete the required classroom training before scheduling their next testing step.
Choose Your Required Driving Option
After completing the four-hour online course, Ohio requires an additional driving component before retesting. Applicants may complete four hours of behind-the-wheel instruction with a licensed abbreviated adult driver training instructor, or they may complete 24 hours of driving with a licensed driver age 21 or older.
Applicants choosing the 24-hour option may not complete more than four hours of driving in one day and must submit the Twenty-Four Hour Affidavit, form BMV 5789. The affidavit documents the practice-driving option and should be completed carefully before the next road or maneuverability test attempt.
