Getting your Ohio permit and license

Once you complete the course, your next steps depend on your age, course, and license path.

For Drivers Under 18

Complete 24 hours of classroom or online instruction, eight hours of behind-the-wheel training, and 50 hours of supervised practice, including 10 hours at night. You must hold your TIPIC for at least six months before taking the driving and skills test.

For Drivers Ages 18–20

Complete 24 hours of classroom or online instruction, eight hours of behind-the-wheel training, and 50 hours of supervised practice, including 10 hours at night. Bring the required documentation to your driving and skills test.

For Abbreviated Adult Applicants Age 21 or Older

After completing the four-hour online course, complete either four hours of behind-the-wheel instruction with a licensed instructor or 24 hours of driving with a licensed driver age 21 or older. The 24-hour option requires form BMV 5789.

For Limited Term Applicants

Requirements depend on the applicant's age and exemption status. Eligible applicants may need 24 hours of online instruction, eight hours of behind-the-wheel training, and 50 hours of supervised practice, including 10 hours at night. Confirm the applicant's requirements with the Ohio BMV.
