Who Needs Driver's Ed in Ohio?
Drivers under 18 generally must complete:
TIPIC.
24 hours of approved theory.
8 professional behind-the-wheel hours.
50 supervised driving hours.
At least 10 supervised hours at night.
Six-month TIPIC holding period.
Ohio driving and maneuverability testing.
Beginning drivers ages 18 through 20 also need the 24-hour theory course, eight professional in-car hours, and 50 supervised hours including at least 10 at night.
Applicants age 21 or older generally do not need the full Class D program before an ordinary first road-test attempt.
Rules for Taking Driver's Ed Online in Ohio
Ohio requires at least 24 hours of beginning-driver theory.
Online courses must prevent students from completing more than four online instructional hours per calendar day and must use identity-validation controls. The final examination contains 50 questions and requires a score of at least 75 percent.
The online completion certificate must be issued within five business days after successful completion.
Professional behind-the-wheel instruction cannot begin until the driving school receives that certificate. The professional program requires at least eight hours.
