Who Needs Driver's Ed in Ohio?
Drivers Under 18
A beginning driver under 18 generally must:
Obtain a TIPIC.
Complete 24 hours of approved classroom, virtual, or online driver education.
Complete 8 hours of professional behind-the-wheel instruction.
Complete 50 hours of supervised driving.
Complete at least 10 supervised hours at night.
Hold the TIPIC for at least six months.
Pass Ohio's driving and maneuverability tests.
Ohio driver education generally cannot begin before age 15 years and 5 months without approval from the Director of Public Safety.
Drivers Ages 18 Through 20
Ohio now requires applicants under age 21 to complete approved driver training and document at least 50 supervised driving hours, including 10 at night. The approved online-provider directory specifically states that the 24-hour theory requirement applies to ages 18 through 20 as well as teens.
The BMV lists the six-month TIPIC holding requirement for under-18 applicants. Its separate ages 18-through-20 requirements do not list that same six-month minimum.
Beginning Drivers Age 21 or Older
A typical first-time applicant age 21 or older seeking a standard license does not generally have to complete the full Class D driver-education program before the first road-test attempt.
If the applicant fails the road or maneuverability test, Ohio generally requires an approved Abbreviated Adult Driver Training course before another attempt unless qualifying driver training was completed during the previous 12 months.
Rules for Taking Driver's Ed Online in Ohio
Current Ohio rules require an approved beginning-driver program to contain at least 24 hours of theory. Online providers must prevent students from completing more than four online instructional hours in a calendar day.
Online programs must also use individual usernames and passwords and periodic personal-validation questions. Two failed validation attempts result in a 24-hour course lockout.
The final examination contains 50 randomly selected questions. A student must score at least 75 percent. After failing, the student may receive no more than two additional attempts without further education, and a new final cannot be given less than 24 hours after the previous attempt.
After successful completion, the online provider must issue the Certificate of Completion of an Online Driver Education Program within five business days.
For an online student, professional behind-the-wheel training cannot begin until the in-car school has received that online completion certificate. Ohio requires at least eight professional driving hours, limits in-car instruction to three hours in one day, and requires at least two hours of non-expressway professional training before an instructor takes a beginning driver onto an expressway.
