Who Needs Driver's Ed in Ohio?
Ohio currently applies different licensing requirements depending on the driver's age.
Drivers Under 18
Ohio allows an applicant to begin the temporary-permit process at age 15 years and 6 months.
Before obtaining a probationary driver license, a driver under 18 must:
Obtain a Temporary Instruction Permit Identification Card, or TIPIC.
Complete 24 hours of classroom or approved online driver education.
Complete 8 hours of professional behind-the-wheel instruction.
Complete 50 hours of supervised driving.
Complete at least 10 of those supervised hours at night.
Hold the TIPIC for at least six months.
Pass Ohio's required driving and skills tests.
Ohio's current driver-training rule generally does not allow a student to begin driver education before age 15 years and 5 months without approval from the Director of Public Safety.
Drivers Ages 18 Through 20
Ohio's rules changed for this age group.
Beginning drivers ages 18, 19, and 20 now must complete:
24 hours of classroom or approved online driver education.
8 hours of professional driving instruction.
50 hours of supervised practice driving.
At least 10 hours of supervised night driving.
The Ohio driving and skills tests.
The six-month TIPIC holding period is specifically included in Ohio BMV's under-18 requirements. The BMV's separate requirements for drivers ages 18 through 20 do not list a six-month minimum permit period.
Beginning Drivers Age 21 or Older
A typical first-time applicant age 21 or older is not required to complete the standard 24-hour Class D course and 8-hour professional driving program before the first road-test attempt.
The applicant still must obtain a TIPIC and pass the required driving and skills tests.
If an initial-license applicant age 21 or older fails the road or maneuverability portion of the driving test, Ohio requires abbreviated adult driver training before the applicant attempts the test again, unless qualifying driver training was completed during the preceding 12 months.
Ohio's Abbreviated Adult Driver Training program includes several options. A driver may complete four hours of approved online instruction or classroom instruction. A driver selecting only the four-hour theory option must also document at least 24 hours of driving experience with a licensed driver. Another option combines four hours of theory with four hours of professional behind-the-wheel instruction.
Rules for Taking Driver's Ed Online in Ohio
Ohio permits beginning drivers to complete the required theory instruction through an approved online provider.
The Ohio DPS directory identifies A Skillful Driver as one of the approved online schools offering the required 24-hour theory program.
24 Hours of Required Theory
Ohio's beginning-driver course includes at least 24 hours of driver education. The theory portion may be delivered through an approved online program.
Daily Online Instruction Limit
Ohio requires online providers to use controls preventing students from completing more than four hours of online instruction in a calendar day.
Student Identity and Participation Controls
Approved online programs must provide students with individual usernames and passwords.
Ohio also requires personal validation questions throughout the program and during the final examination. A student generally has 60 seconds to answer a validation question and one additional opportunity after an incorrect response. Failing both validation attempts results in a 24-hour lockout.
Online Final Examination
Ohio's online beginning-driver final exam:
Contains 50 questions.
Uses questions drawn randomly from the state's examination bank.
Requires a score of at least 75 percent.
Allows no more than two additional attempts after a failed first attempt without repeating the education.
Requires at least 24 hours between examination attempts.
Online Completion Certificate
After a student completes every required module and passes the final examination, the online provider must issue a Certificate of Completion of an Online Driver Education Program within five business days.
When Can Behind-the-Wheel Training Begin?
A student completing the theory requirement online must finish the online course before beginning the required professional behind-the-wheel instruction.
The in-car driving school must receive the student's online completion certificate before providing behind-the-wheel instruction. The student must also hold a valid temporary permit or driver's license.
Ohio requires at least eight hours of professional behind-the-wheel instruction for beginning drivers subject to the Class D training requirement.
Ohio also limits beginning drivers to no more than three hours of behind-the-wheel instruction in one day. The first hour must occur in an area reasonably free from substantial pedestrian and vehicle traffic. A professional instructor cannot take a beginning driver onto an expressway until the student has received at least two hours of non-expressway behind-the-wheel instruction.
For Logan County students, this distinction is important:
A Skillful Driver provides the online theory portion.
A separate Ohio-licensed driving school provides professional in-car instruction.
Parents or other eligible adults provide the required supervised practice.
The Ohio BMV administers permits, testing, and licensing.
Ohio Licensing Process for Logan County Beginning Drivers
1. Prepare for the Ohio Knowledge Test
Review the current Ohio Driver Manual and BMV practice materials.
2. Take the Knowledge Test
Ohio's knowledge test contains 40 multiple-choice questions about traffic laws and signs. Applicants must answer at least 75 percent correctly.
The test may be completed online through BMV Online Services or in person at an eligible deputy registrar or driver examination station. Applicants younger than 19 who test online must have an eligible supervising adult complete the required identity-verification process.
3. Complete the Vision Screening
Applicants must pass a vision screening.
Students who complete the knowledge test online receive the vision screening when purchasing the TIPIC at a deputy registrar.
4. Purchase the TIPIC
After passing the knowledge and vision requirements, the applicant must purchase the TIPIC from an Ohio deputy registrar within 60 days.
Applicants should review the BMV's current acceptable-document requirements before visiting.
5. Complete Online Driver's Ed
Drivers subject to Ohio's under-21 Class D education requirement complete the 24-hour theory course through an approved provider such as A Skillful Driver.
6. Complete Professional Behind-the-Wheel Training
After completing the online course and receiving the online completion certificate, arrange the required eight professional driving hours with an Ohio-licensed driving school.
7. Complete 50 Supervised Hours
Drivers under 21 must complete 50 hours of supervised practice, including at least 10 hours at night.
8. Meet the Six-Month Requirement if Under 18
Drivers under age 18 must hold the TIPIC for at least six months.
9. Schedule the Driving and Skills Tests
Ohio directs applicants to BMV Online Services to schedule the driving and skills tests. Do not assume that every deputy registrar performs road testing.
10. Bring the Required Documents and Vehicle
Requirements vary by age, but applicants should expect to bring the TIPIC, an acceptable vehicle, driver-education documentation when applicable, and the completed supervised-driving affidavit when required.
11. Pass the Driving and Skills Tests
Complete Ohio's required driving and maneuverability testing.
12. Purchase the Driver License
After passing, the applicant generally has 60 days to purchase the appropriate license from a deputy registrar.
Learning to Drive in Logan County
Logan County combines a small urban center, major divided highways, rural roads, agricultural areas, lake communities, and large employment centers.
Bellefontaine is the county seat and largest municipality. Logan County's 2025 county financial report lists a population of approximately 46,150 and identifies Indian Lake, Campbell Hill, Mad River Mountain, and Ohio Caverns among the county's notable destinations.
US 33 is the county's principal higher-speed regional corridor. It connects Bellefontaine with the Indian Lake area to the northwest and the East Liberty area to the southeast.
The East Liberty Auto Plant is located in Logan County on SR 347. Honda reports approximately 2,800 associates at the facility and is preparing the plant for electric-vehicle production. This creates a substantial employment and commuting destination in eastern Logan County.
The northwestern part of the county presents a different environment. Indian Lake State Park provides approximately 5,100 acres of water and supports extensive recreational activity. Lakeview, Russells Point, Huntsville, and surrounding roads place beginning drivers close to state highways, lake access, residential areas, and recreational destinations.
Major Roads and Highways in Logan County
U.S. Route 33
US 33 is one of the most important roads for a Logan County driver.
It provides divided, higher-speed travel through the county and connects Bellefontaine, the Indian Lake vicinity, and the East Liberty region.
For a beginning driver, US 33 introduces:
Acceleration and merging.
Higher operating speeds.
Interchange decisions.
Lane positioning.
Greater following distances.
Transitions from rural local roads to divided highway travel.
Ohio does not allow a professional instructor to take a beginning driver onto an expressway until the student has completed at least two hours of behind-the-wheel instruction on non-expressway roads.
U.S. Route 68
US 68 is an important north-south route through the Bellefontaine area and provides connections toward communities north and south of the county seat.
For new drivers, it provides experience with commercial access points, intersections, higher-speed approaches to developed areas, and the transition between Bellefontaine and more rural portions of Logan County.
State Route 47
SR 47 provides another important east-west connection through the Bellefontaine area and rural western Logan County.
It is useful for practicing transitions between city intersections and open two-lane roadway conditions.
State Route 540
SR 540 connects directly with the US 33 network near Bellefontaine.
Drivers using this area need to recognize the difference between ordinary surface-road traffic and limited-access highway entrances and exits.
State Routes 117 and 366
SR 117 and SR 366 are especially relevant near Huntsville and Indian Lake.
An ODOT safety study identifies the SR 117 and SR 366 intersection north of Huntsville as the southeast corner of the network of state routes surrounding Indian Lake. The study describes SR 117 and SR 366 as rural major collectors with 55 mph approaches and notes nearby agricultural, commercial, and residential land uses.
State Routes 235, 274, and 368
These routes help carry traffic around the Indian Lake area and connect smaller communities to US 33.
For beginning drivers, the lake-area network requires frequent changes between higher-speed state highways, intersections, village streets, park access points, and local roads.
Indian Lake Driving: Logan County's Distinctive Local Challenge
Indian Lake is one of the features that makes driving in Logan County different from many other Ohio counties.
Indian Lake State Park contains approximately 5,100 acres of water and is designed around boating and other recreational use.
For a new driver, the practical issue is not the lake itself. It is the road network surrounding a major recreational destination.
The Indian Lake area includes Lakeview, Russells Point, Huntsville, residential neighborhoods, park facilities, and several intersecting state routes.
A beginning driver should practice:
Watching carefully for turning vehicles near park and lake-access entrances.
Allowing additional distance around vehicles towing boats or recreational equipment.
Recognizing sudden transitions from 55 mph rural highways into developed areas.
Checking carefully before crossing or entering higher-speed state routes.
Avoiding assumptions about familiar intersections during construction.
Expecting more unfamiliar drivers during popular recreation periods.
US 33 and SR 274 Roundabout Project
Logan County's transportation network continues to change.
Bellefontaine's January 2026 mobility update reports an ODOT safety project at US 33 and SR 274. The project is scheduled from spring 2026 through spring 2027 and will convert the intersection to a roundabout to improve safety and reduce congestion.
This gives Logan County beginning drivers a practical reason to understand modern roundabouts.
A driver approaching a roundabout should:
Slow before entering.
Watch signs and lane markings.
Yield to traffic already circulating.
Select the correct lane before entry when multiple lanes are present.
Avoid stopping unnecessarily inside the roundabout.
Signal when exiting when appropriate.
Students who regularly travel between Bellefontaine and the Indian Lake area should verify current construction conditions before driving.
Rural Highways and Agricultural Areas
Large portions of Logan County remain rural outside Bellefontaine and the Indian Lake communities.
The county's tax records continue to identify substantial agricultural property throughout its townships.
A new driver leaving Bellefontaine, Lakeview, West Liberty, or another incorporated community may quickly move onto two-lane roads with higher speeds and fewer traffic controls.
Important skills include:
Looking farther ahead before passing or turning.
Recognizing slow-moving farm equipment.
Leaving additional stopping distance.
Watching for vehicles entering from county and township roads.
Reducing speed before hills, curves, or limited-sight intersections.
Using extra caution after dark where lighting is limited.
Winter Driving and Logan County Snow Emergencies
Winter driving is locally relevant in Logan County.
The Logan County Sheriff's Office uses Ohio's three-level snow emergency system.
Level 1 indicates hazardous roads with possible blowing, drifting, or icy conditions.
Level 2 indicates more serious hazardous conditions and advises motorists that only necessary travel should occur.
Level 3 closes roadways to non-emergency personnel except for necessary or emergency travel.
Beginning drivers should check Logan County emergency information before traveling during severe winter weather rather than relying only on normal travel times or road familiarity.
Employment Traffic Near East Liberty
Eastern Logan County contains a major automotive manufacturing presence.
Honda's East Liberty Auto Plant is located at 11000 State Route 347 in Logan County. Honda reports approximately 2,800 associates and production capacity of approximately 240,000 vehicles annually.
US 33 also forms part of Ohio's Smart Mobility Corridor connecting the East Liberty area with Dublin and transportation research infrastructure.
For a new driver, this means portions of eastern Logan County combine rural roads with major employment destinations and regional highway traffic.
Online Driver's Ed Throughout Logan County
Because A Skillful Driver provides the theory portion online, students do not need to drive to Bellefontaine simply to attend the 24-hour driver-education classroom requirement.
Eligible students can complete the online portion from communities throughout Logan County.
The professional eight-hour behind-the-wheel component remains separate.
Students living in smaller villages or rural portions of the county should evaluate the location and scheduling of licensed in-car schools before beginning the licensing process.
Important Cities and Villages in Logan County
Bellefontaine Drivers
Bellefontaine is the Logan County seat and the county's principal population and service center.
New drivers encounter city intersections and commercial traffic before reaching higher-speed routes such as US 33, US 68, SR 47, and SR 540.
Bellefontaine is also the county's primary BMV location and contains the two behind-the-wheel training locations currently identified in the Ohio DPS directory.
Russells Point Drivers
Russells Point sits within the Indian Lake area.
New drivers should become comfortable moving between village streets and the surrounding state-route network. Recreational travel associated with Indian Lake adds another reason to scan carefully for turning vehicles and changing traffic patterns near lake access points.
Lakeview Drivers
Lakeview is another major Indian Lake community.
The surrounding road environment includes SR 235, SR 366, local streets, residential areas, and connections toward US 33.
Students practicing here should focus on speed transitions and careful intersection scanning.
West Liberty Drivers
West Liberty serves the southeastern portion of Logan County and connects surrounding rural areas with Bellefontaine and nearby counties.
The village environment gives beginning drivers useful practice moving from slower local streets onto higher-speed rural roads.
Huntsville Drivers
Huntsville sits close to US 33 and the southeastern side of Indian Lake.
ODOT records identify SR 117 and SR 274 within Huntsville and the nearby SR 117 and SR 366 intersection.
This creates a useful practice environment for learning how village streets connect with 55 mph rural state highways.
De Graff Drivers
De Graff serves western Logan County and is surrounded by a more rural roadway environment than Bellefontaine.
Students should become comfortable with two-lane roads, limited nighttime lighting, changing speed limits, and longer distances between controlled intersections.

Driving and Skills Testing
Ohio directs applicants to BMV Online Services to schedule driving and skills tests and to select an available examination location.
Current BMV documentation confirms the Bellefontaine deputy registrar at 1365 County Road 32 N., Suite 3, but the current official web materials reviewed for this page did not clearly identify a separately named Logan County road-test station. Students should therefore use the official BMV scheduling system to confirm the testing location rather than assuming the deputy registrar conducts the road test.
BMV addresses, services, testing availability, and operating hours can change. Check the Ohio BMV before visiting.
