Who Needs Driver's Ed in Ohio?
Drivers under 18 generally need a TIPIC, 24 hours of approved theory, eight professional in-car hours, 50 supervised hours including 10 at night, a six-month TIPIC period, and successful driving and maneuverability tests.
Beginning drivers ages 18 through 20 must also complete approved driver training and 50 supervised hours with at least 10 at night.
A typical first-time applicant age 21 or older does not generally need the full Class D program before a first road-test attempt. After failing the road or maneuverability test, Ohio's abbreviated adult requirement generally applies before another attempt unless qualifying recent training applies.
Rules for Taking Driver's Ed Online in Ohio
Ohio requires at least 24 hours of beginning-driver theory. An approved online provider may satisfy that requirement.
Online students are limited to four online instructional hours per calendar day. Programs must use individual credentials and periodic identity-validation questions.
The final contains 50 randomly selected questions and requires at least 75 percent to pass. Students may receive no more than two additional attempts without further education, with at least 24 hours between final-exam attempts.
The completion certificate must be issued within five business days.
Professional in-car instruction begins only after an online student finishes the course and the driving school receives the online completion certificate. The professional requirement includes at least eight hours, and an instructor cannot take a beginning driver onto an expressway until the student has completed two non-expressway professional hours.
