Behind-the-Wheel Training in Medina
The county foundation identifies three current local Ohio DPS-listed resources:
Pro Driving School - Medina, 799 N. Court Street
Myers Driving School, 437 Lafayette Road
Town & Country Driving School, 3812 Pearl Road
That gives Medina students several geographic options for the required professional-driving component.
Learning to Drive in Medina: SR 18, US 42 and Public Square
State Route 18
SR 18 is one of Medina's principal east-west commercial routes and connects directly with larger suburban and interstate travel.
The current regional transportation program includes major widening of SR 18 east of Medina toward the I-71 area, with additional lanes programmed through the Foote Road, River Styx and Nettleton Road corridor.
For a learner, SR 18 requires:
Early lane selection
Turning-lane awareness
Commercial driveway scanning
Pedestrian awareness
Adjustment between city and suburban traffic
U.S. 42 / Court Street
U.S. 42/Court Street is another defining Medina corridor and passes directly through the historic downtown.
Medina has previously designed pedestrian-safety improvements around Court Street at Public Square, including shorter pedestrian crossing distances at Liberty and Washington streets.
For a beginning driver, Court Street combines:
Regional traffic
Downtown pedestrians
Parked vehicles
Signalized intersections
Public Square events
Turns onto smaller local streets
Medina Public Square
Medina's historic Public Square creates a distinctly different environment from I-71 or suburban SR 18.
Students should practice:
Looking for pedestrians before turns
Reading lane markings early
Watching for parked vehicles
Avoiding abrupt lane changes
Expecting increased activity during downtown events
Medina High School
Medina High School
777 E. Union Street
Medina, OH 44256
The current district website confirms that address and lists current 2026-27 school events.
East Union Street therefore has clear relevance for new teen drivers during arrival, dismissal, athletics and school events.
East Smith Road Reconstruction
Medina's capital planning identifies East Smith Road Reconstruction as a 2026 construction project with an estimated cost of approximately $1.55 million.
STATUS: 2026 CONSTRUCTION PROJECT.
Students should check current city notices for temporary lane, access or detour information.
State Road Reconstruction Planning
Medina is also designing a separate State Road reconstruction from West Smith Road north toward the railroad near Progress Drive.
Public comments were collected in early 2026, and the city states that design and further project notification are continuing.
STATUS: DESIGN/PLANNING, NOT THE SAME AS EAST SMITH ROAD CONSTRUCTION.
Future SR 3 and SR 57 Resurfacing
Medina's capital program also identifies SR 3 and SR 57 resurfacing for 2027 construction, including portions of South Court Street, Broadway Street and Wadsworth Road.
Again, this should not be described as active 2026 construction.
