Three State Routes Meet in Waldo

Waldo has a particularly useful numbered-route configuration.

SR 423 has its southern terminus in Waldo at the same intersection where SR 47 ends and SR 98 begins.

For students, Marion Street provides a direct transition from village streets toward Marion.

Main Street / State Route 47

SR 47 reaches its eastern terminus in Waldo.

Main Street forms part of the compact village center and provides a very different environment from nearby U.S. 23:

This makes Waldo useful for practicing the transition between small-town streets and regional highways.

U.S. 23 Near Waldo

Modern U.S. 23 runs east of the older SR 423 alignment and provides the primary high-speed north-south route between Marion and Delaware/Columbus.

The Marion County foundation identifies U.S. 23 as the county's principal freight and regional corridor.

Students should progress to U.S. 23 only after becoming comfortable with:

Merging

Trucks

Lane changes

Longer following distances

Major U.S. 23/I-71 Connector Study

Waldo is especially relevant to one of central Ohio's largest current transportation studies.

The ongoing U.S. 23/I-71 Connector Feasibility Study specifically focuses on the area north of Waldo, with potential future alignments connecting U.S. 23 to I-71.

The feasibility study is expected to be completed by October 1, 2026.

The current study has evaluated multiple preliminary alignments and is continuing engineering analysis and public review.

STATUS: PLANNING/FEASIBILITY STUDY. NO NEW FREEWAY IS CURRENTLY BEING PRESENTED AS BUILT.

This distinction is important for the city page.

For a student driver, the study demonstrates that the regional highway network around Waldo could change substantially over time, making route signs and current maps more reliable than assumptions based on old road configurations.

Waldo Community Park and Bicycle Traffic

Waldo Community Park is located at:

The park served as the starting point for the 2026 Hot Tamale Bicycle Tour, with routes using farm roads around Waldo and continuing through the surrounding area.

This gives Waldo legitimate bicycle-awareness content.

A beginning driver should:

Leave adequate passing space

Avoid squeezing past cyclists on narrow rural roads

Watch carefully at intersections

Expect groups of cyclists during organized events

River Valley Local Schools

Waldo is part of the River Valley Local School District.

The current River Valley High School campus is:

Caledonia, OH 43314.

The high school also operates a school-based driver-education program through a partnership with MOVESC Driving School. River Valley states that students who have already completed online training can enroll for behind-the-wheel training through the program.

This is a useful Waldo-specific resource for River Valley students, but eligibility and enrollment should be confirmed directly with the school.
