South Point Ohio Online Driver's Ed

South Point residents can complete the applicable Ohio theory course online through A Skillful Driver while obtaining required professional driving instruction separately.

Ohio DPS currently lists A Skillful Driver among its approved 24-hour online providers for beginning drivers and Limited Term applicants. A separate Abbreviated Adult Driver Training option serves qualifying adult applicants.

Who Needs Driver Education?

Beginning drivers under 21 generally need 24 hours of theory, eight hours of professional driving instruction and 50 supervised hours, including at least 10 at night.

Applicants under 18 generally must also hold their TIPIC for six months. Ages 18 through 20 are subject to Class D training without simply being placed into the abbreviated-adult pathway.

Qualifying standard applicants 21+ can need Abbreviated Adult Driver Training after a first failed road or maneuverability test. Limited Term applicants follow a separate statutory framework.

Online Driver Education and TIPIC

Ohio's current online rules require a comprehensive 50-question final exam and at least 75% correct. The completion certificate must be issued within five business days after successful course completion.

The BMV knowledge test is separate: 40 questions, 75% required, with an online testing option for eligible applicants.

Learning to Drive in South Point: U.S. 52 and Solida Road

South Point's strongest local driver-training context is the connection between village streets, Solida Road and U.S. 52.

Current transportation documents specifically identify the U.S. 52/Solida Road area as part of South Point's road network and transportation planning.

For a beginning driver, this provides practice transitioning between local South Point streets and the larger U.S. 52 corridor.

Planned Solida Road Sidewalk Improvements

South Point also has a significant transportation project that is unusually relevant to student drivers.

KYOVA's current FY 2026-2029 Transportation Improvement Program includes a Village of South Point Sidewalk Project along both sides of Solida Road through the downtown area. The project is intended to improve pedestrian and bicycle connections to schools, village offices, the library, stores and restaurants. The current program assigns construction funding in 2027.

This should currently be described as PLANNED, not as completed infrastructure.

For a learner, the project matters because Solida Road is expected to have a stronger pedestrian component as the improvements are implemented.

Project information reviewed August 26, 2026.
