Who Needs Driver's Ed in Ohio?
Ohio's requirements depend on the driver's age.
Under 18
Minors generally complete:
24 hours of classroom or approved online driver education
8 hours of professional behind-the-wheel instruction
50 hours of supervised driving
10 nighttime driving hours
Six months of TIPIC holding
Required BMV testing
Ages 18 Through 20
Applicants under 21 generally need approved driver training and must document the required driving experience. The classroom component may be completed through an approved online course.
Age 21 or Older
Adults age 21 and older generally do not need the regular 24-hour beginning-driver course for a standard initial license, but abbreviated adult training can become required after a failed driving test when the statutory conditions apply.
Online Driver Education Requirements
Ohio Administrative Code Rule 4501-7-09 became effective August 1, 2026 and expressly allows beginning-driver education to be delivered through an online program. The program must contain at least 24 hours of education. (Ohio Laws and Rules)
